Of course as teenagers we were generally rather less sensetive and considerate with our expressions. I can remember a classmate once expressing his exasperation when it was alleged (albeit falsely) that "the new lad" had tried something on with one of the girls.

I think the idea is he is saying that the South African contingent here will be cheering your boys on (an unprecidented event, given the sporting rivalry) in the cricket, since they got beaten by ours.
