The game doesn't run from workbench directly. It should have installed a script (with an icon) that looks a bit like this when opened in a text editor:

assign AB3D1: ""
assign AB3D2: ""
ab3d

The assigns are essential, the game can't find some files without it and simply sits there.

If you dont have such a script, make one (I'm not 100% sure the exe is called ab3d, but you can check that), create an icon for it, setting the default tool as C:IconX (or telling it to run from shell if you have OS3.5/3.9) and everything should be hunky dory.

Installing with W3DLoad also should ensure error free operation (although I have had it crash on me).
