Just a thought here, tried a different simm for the chipram? (At least I presume the 4000 uses a simm for chipram). Perhaps the simm is fried?

I wouldn't have a clue either...I've only used Amiga's where the chipmem is glued to the mobo :-)
This guide
might be of use to you maybe.
This website is oriented at old macintoshes (macintoshi?) but in regard to figuring out what kind of simm you actually have this can be quite handy, although it doesn't incorporate every ram manufacturer.
