yup, I've been trying to get something done on one of my pc's it happens to be a laptop without cdrom, and I'm trying to install Windows via my home network, but there seem not to be appropriate drivers available for my particular networkcard.

Aw men, and all those floppies with bad sectors on it, or even unreadable (despite being stored dust-free in a disk box), all those computers locked up, all the searching on the net in vain for the right program...
've been fussing around with it the whole day! :furious:


well, maybe I've finally found something usefull: "mswgcn.exe"
not available on the microsoft page anymore :-x
but I found it here

Gentoo is a good linux example, but I personally prefer NetBSD, get yourself a nice new pack of floppies, format two of them, get the NetBSD boot disk images and rawwrite (windows) or DD to put them on the disks, then insert into the laptop (whilst its connected to the network) and follow the reletively straight forward instructions as they come up. You won't regret it (once you've got it all in place).

I tried installing Linux earlier (Mandrake)
but it needed more than 64 mb ram, and that's all I got in the little machine (mini laptop) and it can't be upgraded anymore
I do hope Gentoo does not require that much
And how fast will Linux run on a P233 laptop (and especially, the gui, since I also need to connect to the internet with it)?
(and NO, buying a new laptop is not an option, financially beseen)

(and I do not know if it's a good decision to install Linux on it: I need to use some programs that are Windows only, and I do not think my laptop is fast enough to run wine)

ok, tried to install dos tcp ip stuff with "MS LAN MANAGER"
after a lotta juggling with renaming pragrams/drivers and editing in .INI files I managed to get a positive ping result. Also, the router finds the laptop (for tis a laptop wich it has to be installed to)

BUT....

nothing to be seen on the network neighbourhood, nor can I see anything on my laptop. When I boot my laptop, everything goes perfect, until I want to log in: "you are logged in but there are no servers found". Though my router's up and running. The lan manager asked specifically a domain name and a static ip adress, while there's no specific domain name to be set up in the router, and the ip adresses are automatically assigned. The static ip adress I use works (with ping, that is), just as it is stated in the manual. But still nothing visible on the networ. There has to be something wrong with the installation of some user level protocols (what's it called again in Windows? NetBEUI, or NetBIOS?)
for the rest, I ran out of ideas atm (3 o'clock in the morning)
got a headache and are sleepy
gee, these ppl should be ashamed of what the "product" they made. yeah, I'm really grumpy, maybe I'm going to sue Microsoft, to demand money from the hours that I spent on this nonsense (it should've worked in an instance) grumble grumble
And my hours are expensive :-D
