Afaik, the only way to overcome the file size limit on a PPC equipped, classic Amiga is to use OS4. Is this right or wrong?

AFAIK you need:

1. An Operating System with 64-bit DOS support
2. A file system that's capable of doing this (which is still quite rare, but something like EXT2, smbfs, NTFS(?) should work)
3. Applications that *can actually handle* files of this size (have to use the new DOS API).

MorphOS is Amiga done right! :)

Indeed, the MorphOS for Amiga (version 1.4.5) does not support this, neither does AmigaOS 3. MorphOS 2 does support this, but isn't available for Amiga/PowerUP, and I doubt it will ever be (but who knows). So I guess OS4 will be your only option.

Well, the question was what options there are, and none of the *free* OS's for his Amiga supports this. MorphOS *does* support it, only not the version available for his Amiga, so... :-)
