You're quite wrong there..  AmigaOS4 is coming, and that right soon.

See AmigaOS 4.0 On Tour.

Oh, so basically you are saying (judging from the context in which you post, the statements you are answering to, and the contents of your own post) that OS4 is going to be released to end users, running on the A1 hardware, on 07.06.2003? I was under impression that the "OS4 On Tour" was just a controlled demonstration of the OS, running on legacy Amiga PPC hardware? That is of course nice and long waited for, but surely you must understand  that this has nothing to do with either release nor the A1 hardware (you were answering to a statement which said "unless you are a linux freak, don't buy an A1 at this point because linux is all you are going to run on it for a long time")?

For this demonstration they will propably use a somewhat "clean" HW setup with their choice of programs, carefully selected. All the parameters will be known. But a final end-user version, ready for release, will have to run stable in all thinkable HW configurations where the user has spent the previous 10 years or so patching the system in different ways (many unknown parameters).

I would guess that a CSPPC version of OS4 won't be released until late summer/fall at the earliest. And then we are still speaking of an OS running in a legacy envireonment, where the custom chips are still available. My guess is that Hyperion at this time focus their efforts towards bringing OS4 out to the classic Amiga instead of the A1 (guessing the reason: some parts of the OS still depends on the legacy hardware envireonment and they want to release a product ASAP to get momentum for further development). The A1 comes after that, and that will be a complete ailien envireonment for the OS (and the applications running on it), and I guess it will take some more time to make the OS and legacy applications run stable on that HW. After all, "you will only have 1 chance to make a good first impression", and you really don't want to release an OS that can be crashed by some certain legacy applications, not after all the laughs, sneering and mockery MorphOS/Pegasos rendered because of this fact. My guess is that OS4 is still very far away from the A1 hardware. Christmas 2003? Perhaps too optimistic. Q1/Q2 of 2004?

A lot of guessing as you can see. But at least I try to base them on realistic assumptions. If you don't agree and is replying to this, please do the same.

Add a fifth category, "When OS4 is released for better A1 hardware than the current, with a reasonable price". You can count me into that category!  :-)

As for IBM's 64-bit PPC, it isn't available for any desktops right now.

OK, no need for that, I am sorry for the sarcasm above. No harm intended. I guess some things are worth waiting for, other things are not.  ;-)
