Serial port, isn't it? Back in the days we used to run slip or ppp over nullmodem with a un*x machine in the other end. Today this un*x machine is replaced with a tiny computer that fits into the connector that you can plug directly into the serial port. :)

So you plug it in and power it up, it offers command line interface that you can access via terminal program or "dial up" scripts of Miami/AmiTCP/Genesi to configure its TCP/IP stack. After initial commands to get it online, you tell it you want to run ppp, and off you go. Quite brilliant really, only problem is speed, which is limited by the slow serial interface of the amiga.
