pcmcia network advise

found  the  etherlink111 pcmcia  card to match my cable at last  ..so now i thought id ask what software etc will i need to network to my pc to enable me to transfer files  an mostly i want to be able to go online from my a1200 ..email would be good  ..just norm type stuff ..
get the card via ebay this week  ..but a bit lost on the setup  etc  ill need to do..
pc  is running  xp  ..usb wireless  internet ..

actually it will be networked  by cable  from the amiga card to the network card on my pc ..or a hub ..as i have a hub ..somewhere ..i remember  something about the cables are different if they go to a hub  or directley to the pc network ...ive got thursday friday  free so  will have the card prob from tuesday  or wed  ..so ill do the setup one step at a time  ..have put my amiga online with amitcp  dial up years ago ..forget  most of it ..was hoping the active.netconnect  cd would do most the hard work for me ..it has genesis wizard  program an a host of other programs  all fully registered  ..includes  voyager 3  ..i dont think thats registered though ..this could be fun or a nightmare  ..think once i get it going ill do a complete backup ..though  since i setup everything  i cant get napalm to run ..weird ..but everything else is great  ..an yes i am running 3.5  ...cant get 3.9 running on this machine  ..tried a few times  it always fails  after it installs...thanks for all the help ..an i know ill ask more questions  yet..:>

The Amiga 1200 has a problem with ethernet cards
and you will need to employ the card reset tool
available from Aminet. I just fire it up to start
the process before activating the TCP/IP Stacker

THE TCP/IP STACKER
Whilst Nordic Global are no longer shipping their
excellent MiamiDX, the archive is still available
from Aminet. The installation is very simple and
the step by step instructions make it pretty well
impossible to install incorrectly. There is a timeout
sadly on the demo, but you may be lucky in obtaining a key

This is the main archive for Miami Deluxe 1.0c.
Miami Deluxe is an easy-to-use TCP/IP stack for Internet
access and access to local networks, complete with

supports multiple interfaces, routing IP-NAT, SOCKSD,
dial-on-demand and much more.

You will also need other archives -- see below.

Minimum requirements:

- Any Amiga with Kick/WB2.04 or higher

- 68020 or higher

- MUI 3.8 or higher

Miami Deluxe 1.0c is distributed across two archives: one
main archive and one GUI module.

- MiamiDx10c-main.lha: Main archive. *Everybody* needs to
download this archive.

- MiamiDx10c-MUI.lha: MUI user interface module for
MiamiDx. Requires MUI 3.8 or higher.

At this time you need to download both archives.

You may find you need one or two libraries and installers
to unpack software and run applications. You will find
all these on Aminet... like the latest installer and reqtools
and ofcourse MUI 3.8




MUI 3.8
You really won`t get very far on an Amiga without
MUI and this can still be purchased. You can opt to
buy the USER INTERFACE key or run the demo. Personally
I opted to buy the key and was emailed this by return
having purchased this through a PC on line
MUI installs automatically so there are no problems
with the installation

The Mail Reader
For my money there is only one mail reader and
this is YAM. The software is free. I would recommend
getting it from the YAM website as the all the five
archives are here and they are not corrupt. Although
it looks as though you don`t need all five archives
you do need all five and you must un-archive them
into a single folder. You will need LHA which is an
Amiga tool that resides in your C drawer on your workbench
Hopefully you have DOPUS, which makes life all that easier.
Again, its just a case of firing up the install icon
and installing the software on your system. When
running YAM you will need your POP3 and smtp names,
like pop3.freeuk.net and relay.freeuk.net or
pop3.virgin.net and smtp.virgin.net, your domain
name like freeuk.net and your mail account name
and password. Its that simple.

I purchased AWEB-II off Ebay, but there are several
about. Like Ibrowse which all do the job of surfing
As ever the software is self installing, and in the
case of AWEB, there is no further setting up of the
software.

Rememeber that for both mail and internet you need
to go on-line with MIAMI to get the stack running
Also remember to tell the payer of the telephone
bill what your up to... Happy surfing.

For Broadband I need to do the same, but instead run the
NMBD after I have gone on line with the Interface set up
with DHCP and not my local network, and like magic when I
run YAM the looping is no more. It is wonderful that
you can set up Miami with differing configs for interfaces.



SAMBA: Ghost in the Machine

I had this problem with the Amiga, where when I was online
with the Amiga and Miami using the ethernet, with say
an MS machine on the network, the SCSI drive with Samba
on it would run through a continuous loop. This was
identified using Scout and SnoopDOS..

In Miami, set the IP type, netmask, and gateway of your
interface to DHCP. Then press the 'TCP/IP Settings...'
button and enable DHCP there. Send your hostname as well.
Set 'Get Dynamic DNS Servers' to 'verify&add'. Hopefully
that will solve your general connection problem.

[ Then my general realisation of the problem ]

Your comments made me realise I was not doing something
I usually do when I run the interface on my network...
( ie when as an assigned IP address for machines not on
the broadband network ) When I put online the Ethernet for
this network I force NMBD by activating a script from an
icon I have on the workbench backdrop.

Before, I was using dialup so not using ethernet for my
internet ( just a modem ) so when I checked YAM I wasn't
using the ethernet. Then I would activate differing computers
from running NMBD and putting the interface online and not
the DIALER. I would then run another script from an icon on
the desktop as follows:

Run SMBFS Volume="PCComputer" Workgroup=Amiga user=scuzz
Service=//Amiga/c/amiga

This then activated the PC drive as an icon on the workbench
and was accessible as a drive on the Amiga. I have several
icons on the desktop setup this way to access drives on
other machines. Thing is I naturally ran NMBD when I put
the network interface online and forgot I would need to do
the same to use the ethernet for the broadband. So I just
fired up the interface ran NMBD and then YAM and there was
one loop as the computers talked to each other and they
realised who each was and the loop stopped. Job done.
Missing the obvious. But talking here made me realise.
So thanks for that.

Process for putting Amiga online on the PCMCIA ethernet
interface:

First click my CardReset tool to get over that bug with
the PCMCIA interface. Click Suspend and the card goes on line:

I then fire up Miami and finding the Inteface that has the
specific IP addresses set up for my local network I put
this online.

I then run the NMBD script from an icon I created for the
following script:

WAIT8
run>nil: samba:bin/nmbd -D
run>nil: MiamiSysCtl -w inetd.toomany=50

I then get that single looping hard drive sound as the
computers talk to each other.

I then click my icon for the drive on the other PC that I
want to access:

Wait8
Run SMBFS Volume="PCComputer" Workgroup=Amiga user=scuzz
Service=//Amiga/c/amiga

And then that drive appears on the workbench and I can access
that drawer as a normal Amiga drawer. I have these set up
in DOpus.

got the card  ...can someone  point me in the direction of the card reset tool ..had a quick look  an the netconnect  is helpful ..but  wants  details i dont know ..this will be a learning curve ..
