Yes, SAMBA would work great on OS X, for MacOS 9.x and below you might also try to find a copy of the CrossMAC filesystem (by the same author as CrossDOS) which should work fine over an established network connection and deals with evil things like macbinary and resource forks.

 There was APPLETALK over TCP/IP once available too.. Not sure where that disappeared to..

We used to have a mac and a bunch of amiga's networked thru C-Ltd's SCSI net.. Now that was fast and good networking for it's time..
