If I didn't have school I'd help you out, I used to work as a software engineer, and have worked in house with game developers on projects before.
The best I can do is offer you some advice or help when you're stuck at this point though. School's gonna' kill me this year (18 credit hours, 1 independant project, and I have to compose a piece for a 30 piece orchestra all this semester!)
One place you may want to look for advice on everything from how to get started to how to handle different aspects of things would be on
www.gamedev.net they're a wonderful site for helping people looking to do this kind of thing (don't forget that the majority of game design and programming is platform independant, so just cause they don't all run Amigas doesn't mean they couldn't be extremely helpful)
