PCMIA ethernet network A1200 - OS 3.5?
« on: December 26, 2002, 07:24:04 PM »
I'm looking for a way to hook up my old A1200 to my lil' iMac trough a ethernet network.

I've found the CNET pcmia drivers at Aminet, accompanied by the list of cards to use.
So that would cover most.

Only i still need a TCP/IP thing.
I'm thinking about getting OS 3.5, would that do the trick and can i use the CNET device with it???
Could i access HD's from both sides, or would i need additional software???

From mac side i'll cook something up with Samba or OS X, still advice would be appreciated.

I know i kinda got all the answers in front of me, but... :-?

Sarkis - os 3.5 has miami bundled with it.. it was to be a full version but............it is not ..it has a time limit of a half hour then a warning and another half hour of use..

So OS 3.5 has no 'full-time' TCP stack???

Yikes... and OS 3.9 is a bit to much cash on the old girl..:-(    at least if you keep my system in mind.

To be honest... as a student i don't have much cash...
and the old girl.... to make it anywhere a decent machine will cost me about 400E (tower, 040) and then i haven't mentioned the graphics yet...
I don't use it that much.
For what i wanted to spend OS3.5 just about covers it... OS 3.9  (...) the money isn't earned back at the moment.

**

I will check amibench, and look for a PCMIA card,
then i'll see what to do.
I know know i need a TCP/IP stack OR OS3.9, samba on both sides and if using a pc card CNET device.

Thanks  for your advice guys (BTW suggestions are still welcome)

I certainly understand that, but I don't understand what that has to do with OS3.9. It'll run as crisply as OS3.5, as they're very similiar.

Sorry-i meant that with my current outfit i found the machine just not worth getting OS 3.9, thus i opted for the half-cost OS 3.5 and mentioned the upgrading.
The whole thread should have been called Amiga->Mac pcmia link

On the downside, it's really old, though. But just think... It'll give you an appreciation of how lousy networking was back in the bad old days before DHCP was common, and a GUI for a network stack was unheard of. It'll give you experience hacking together a bunch of completely bizarre and archiac configuration files in a hideous exercise in futility. NOTE: I'm NOT recommending attempting this, but it IS an option, if money really is the largest determining factor.

Sounds like fun :-D   I'll check it out.
