If you're not really going to do anything serious with it, get a 68030-based accelerator with 32+ megs of RAM. That is the minimum requirement to play
Total Chaos AGA with but still fairly compatible with everything else.
One other thing you might want is to get a 1084S or equivalent monitor so you can display the European PAL scan rates since that's where most Amiga software originates from.

Since you said you are from Scotland, a SCART connection to a PAL TV set should do just as nicely as a 1084S monitor. (I missed the part saying you were from Scotland.)
