Jay Miner, the developer of the original Amiga graphics chipset, based his design on the features of a military flight simulator.  The Amiga was only new in the sense that those graphics acceleration features hadn't come to the desktop yet.

Nowadays it is a simple matter to emulate those features on a system that lacks those features.  It's just that those systems have to be faster by several orders of magnitude to get the original performance.
