I got started in the early '90s and missed most of the classics. I was still on the C64/128 in the '80s. What I liked about the Amiga was its all-around design. The custom chips were special and nobody else had them. Now there are enough custom chips available to do whatever you want. I just hope that we can make a comeback in time for Windows to alienate their own userbase. Not being able to make our own custom chips is a big setback but I think we can emulate most of the old functions with OpenGL so that will get us at least back up to date.
Among my current programming projects is an Amos Basic compiler that uses C as a backend so we should be able to make a lot of classics portable and system-friendly.
