Have you tried changing the device (SCSI_DEVICE_NAME) to uaehf.device from scsi.device in the HDToolbox tooltypes as shown above? The error you describe I believe is the type of error you get when it's pointing to a cdrom drive, or something else that's not a writable disk.
Are you using a card reader or real IDE connection?

I've never heard of nor required those patches you mention. What are they for?
