Help getting new software onto an Amiga?
« on: August 02, 2011, 03:20:12 PM »
Hey everyone,

I've got an Amiga 2000 with a single floppy drive. I own two Amiga floppy disks, which are both minimal AmigaOS (2.04) installations with the age-old Prevue/TV Guide Channel software ("ESQ") running on top (the two disks are almost the same).

The deal is, I have disassembled the ESQ binary, modified it, and re-assembled it, and I would like to be able to run my modified version on my real Amiga instead of just in UAE. But how do I get it there?

I have a serial connection to a PC, but no software (to my knowledge) to transfer files that way. The PC also has a floppy drive, but my understanding is that I cannot read or write Amiga disks through it.

The ESQ software provides a capability for downloading files to the disk, but the replacement binary appears to big for this feature (along with most software I have tried to download).

Any advice? What would be the cheapest way to get a ~150k binary onto the disk?

Did 2.0 come with PC floppy support?  Is there a PC0: icon in Storage/Dosdrivers?

If so, format a floppy as double density on the PC and use that.

If you have SCSI on the PC or IDE on the Amiga, you can mount an Amiga hard drive and use UAE to copy the software to it.

Good luck.

Unfortunately the Amiga doesn't have any hard drive whatsoever, and the copy of AmigaOS has no PC floppy support (it also doesn't have workbench - just a stripped down shell).

If one of your Amiga floppies has the "type" command (or Amiga Basic), you should be able to use serial.

desiv

I do have the "type" command - but according to that site it will only work with Workbench 1.3 and lower? :(

Maybe I'll try anyway.

I'll donate some hardware to keep another developer making Amiga stuff ;)

PM me and we'll work out what you need to get it running with at least a preconfigured hard drive and some ram.

Wow, that's very kind - thanks! I'll contact you shortly.

Hi AriX. I have found that people are more willing to help out and send you what you need to get your Amiga up and running if you fill in the location field in your profile so people will know how far away you are from them. If you're lucky you might even live local enough to someone who can drop over and give you a hand.

Thanks for the advice!
