Any dangers of upgrading to 3.9?
« on: April 10, 2011, 03:09:39 AM »
So looking at upgrading my 3.5 install to 3.9, but wanted to see if there's anything to be particularly concerned about. I don't want to hose everything accidentally.

Anyone have horror stories to share?

Thanks guys :) I'll make this happen tonight.

BTW... Am I going to be hosed if my install is from the first edition , rather than the second edition CD, or will the boing bags fix things anyways?

Well, I couldn't wait so I jumped into it.

It actually installed perfectly fine from compact flash, without any wizardry and scripts.

Booted up and things looked fine. The dock displayed. I didn't have time to really do much, other than poke at a few pref's so I'll test tonight to see if all sorts of stuff broke.

I already have internet set up, and got Ibrowse, sabremsn and stuff. Are there anything on the CD I should be adding?

I'll do the boing bags tonight :)

So boing bag 1 went great. Had to mount the iso to make it work, but thats okay. SOmeone on EAB had a simple little script for it.

If someone is looking to do this install without a CD rom btw, its not really so bad. I;d be happy to explain how I went about it.

Boing bag 2 broke my system.

An hour of messing around with versions of set patch, different startup-sequences etc finally got me back working. It didn't help that the only workbench disk I had was an old workbench 2.05 disk :)

It seems the rom update was the culprit. The installer actually warns that its dodgy but I guess "unlikely to fail" meant "runequesters amiga will break"

Once that was sorted out, everything looks fine. Its not even that slow either. Certainly no more than 3.5.
Amplifier actually works, which is amusing, though sound quality is.. well, not amazing :)
It is SLOOOOW to move around with the skin. Without it, its snap enough. Definately a use for RTG there.

Dock is nice and easy to add stuff to, and looks decent even in 256 colours.

Will I be spending another hour juggling files to repair my system? :D

hm, as it turns out, I should probably have paid attention as I am.. yet again.. unable to boot.

Can someone post their startup-sequence from a WORKING boing bag 3 install ?

edit: if i comment out the changes made by the BB3 install, everything boots okay.

Still curious to see what it ought to look like.

Quick sidenote, but if you want to use isos on a cd/dvd-less amiga simply install VirtualCD. Very easy to use.
No scripts, etc. needed. Simply launch the program and point the requestor to an iso and viola.

ah awesome. Thanks! I managed to download a script thing but I'll definately check that out next time the need hits.

Out of curiosity, would that work for CD32 games?

After BB3, I am also seeing some weird vertical corrupted lines appear when opening a folder occasionally. Rather obnoxious. Any ideas what might cause that?
