Every time I hear about MacOS X I think back to the time, a few years ago, when AmigaOS 4 was supposed to have been some custom stuff on top of a Linux kernel. It would have been interesting to compare MacOS and AmigaOS then, both the same idea (custom GUI on top of a free unix clone) but different ways to get there.
Then there's the question: did Apple get the idea from the public discussions there were going on at the time in Amiga forums?
(could be: according to
slashdot, this stuff was being discussed in 1999, and MacOS X first appeared in 2001, according to
this history page. Plenty of time to port BSD and cook up the new GUI)
