Reading amiga hd on windows/linux?

My A1200 appears to be dying a slow death. It has bootup problems which I suspect may be related to the accellerator. I won't likely be able to replace the accellerator for some time...
 
I have no way to transfer the files off the 1200 when it does boot, so I wondered, can I get a 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch hard drive adapter and read the drive with windows or linux pc's?

I desperately want to copy off my collection of games and graphics applications for later use (or use in uae) but I have no idea how to go about this. Any advice?

Well thats great news, I really just borked my 1200 but good trying to rebuild it. I took the roms chips out, and while reseating them, one leg busted completely off. I don't have a spare set... yes I could try and jury rig it but considering the other problems I'm having with this I don't think thats a good idea.
 
I will order a 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch adapter, I have some ide/usb adapters, is it likely that windows or linux will read this hard drive that way?
 
I've got like 2000 games, hundreds of amiga applications, demos, wallpapers, and so on on this drive. I'll be sick if I can't copy the stuff off. I am cursing myself for not backing this amiga up sooner!
 
I planned on getting a usb device and dvd-r for backups, but never got around to it. Like I said, I'm cursing myself good right now.
 
As for the 1200... Its dead jim! Anyone want to sell me a set of 3.9 roms cheap? Also, just so I know in the future, does the extra pin on the socket end up on the right or left when you install the rom chips?
 
Why there is an extra pin on each side of the socket, I have no idea, seems retarded to me, but then pc's are much more retarded.
 
I do happen to have just gotten a 1000, 2000 (working but need major upgrades) and there is also a 500 tower sitting here that I haven't gotten around to getting working. I suppose the 1200 dying is a good excuse to work on the others.

Yes those were 3.1 roms I got from ebay and looks like they were eprom burned or something... That may be the source of my troubles. Maybe I'll order a new set from amigakit and give this 1200 another go when I have more time. For now, I just want to insure the data is saved and safe.
 
It is a 2.5 inch ide hard drive not a cf card.
 
I suppose I could try plugging it in as a regular ide drive (once the adapter is installed) to my linux machine. (Crossing fingers that works)

Tonight I'll order the 2.5 to 3.5 inch adapter, those are pretty common but lets hope it arrives before I tear ALL my hair out.

Thanks Piru... How about morphos on a 1.25ghz emac reading the hard drive? Maybe its a good time to take the plunge and stop fighting with fickle ancient hardware...?
 
I have been thinking of buying one for awhile. Many of my graphics apps would run great... The games, can I use a competition pro usb joystick with morphos/uae on morph?

I just ordered a 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch ide adapter so I can plug this drive into my linux pc and hopefully save the data. Its partitioned into system, work and games, I hope that won't matter?
