I have a digital copy of Mass Effect 1, purchased and downloaded from Steam. The game will run...if I have all year. The game is super slow: The opening BIOWARE splash screen will take 5 minutes to go by, the following EA screen will take the same amount of time. Then I get to the "Press Any Key" screen, and then 20-30 minutes later, I'll get to the Main Menu. An hour after that (These times are only SLIGHT exaggerations, I am merely rounding up), I will be able to load a game.

The suggestions seems to either set the mass effect CPU affinity to single CPU or to disable all cores but one.

Google, isn't it amazing?

Works like a charm now, as long as you don't tab out (in which case the described problem appears).
Also, trying to play it after coming out of sleep/suspend results in the similar problems it seems.

Did you try to set the CPU affinity for the game process?
