The A1200 can run two devices in the IDE bus directly, without any need for additional hardware.

However, having proper connectors out of the box sure makes life easier.

Proper cabling and software is all you need. Obviously the CD-ROM requires power too, so that needs to be arranged.

Regarding CD burning: CD-R/W drives work just fine with MakeCD. DVD burning is possible with dvdrtools at least.
