Maybe I could put it up on my web site so unfortunate folks could get a new copy?. Not sure if thats illegal or not since the author abandon it long ago?

There is no such thing as abandonware.

It would be legal only after the copyright has expired. It depends on the country, but usually it is about 70 years after the death of the author.

Obviously you could try getting permission from the copyright holder(s) to redristribute the software.

Let me clarify:

IMO morally spihunter has every right to obtain copy to replace his bit-rotten media. However, I don't know if it's legal for him to do so (For example USA and EU have some really dumb laws these days.. nothing to do with moral).

Redistributing the software would be illegal, however (unless if permission was obtained).
