ppc does not help. even 603p@240 is too slow.

Should be no problem, assuming you have software that can do it (say: mplayer compiled for 68k). Naturally you must use JIT and pretty powerful PC.

Then again, why not just use WinDVD or PowerDVD, you get nice surround sound and hw acceleration...

It plays DVDs, assuming your system is fast enough.

Classic systems are not.

Sorry but no go. The only ways to get working DVD playback are:

- have faster cpu
or
- have support for hardware decoder

Naturally things such as SCSI and video overlay (with gfxcard) are required, too.
