You have to continuously test the code, make bug reports and help the devs to keep it working. Unlike what you say, it is *not* a one-time commitment.
Exactly the problem we are seeing already with Android phones.
If you're lucky then a teenager has figured out how to hack together all the different cherry picks and has cobbled something together that barely works. Otherwise you're stuck with the OS that shipped on the phone and can't run new apps.
