I have made some progress (well sort of) I went and purchased a new sata2 hard drive and hooked it up to the Sam booted up and managed to get go the workbench screen followed the onscreen stuff like setting up the languages and stuff got to the hard drive part tried to partition hard drive but an error came up saying it could not format the drive so I restarted the system to start over again and now every time I try to start the installation it hangs on the amigaos 4.1 screen any ideas ?

Hi Carvedeye,

I've found a step-by-step installation guide that might be of help. You can find the link below:

http://www.ngi-info.com/downloads/AmigaOS_4.1_Installation_Guide/Installation_AmigaOS_4.1_Sam440EP_English.pdf

I believe this is more detailed than the guide in the manual that came with the OS.

Hope this was of help. :)

Cheers!

Puni/Void am i doing something wrong? did i do something to the hard drive?

I don't think you've caused any damage to the harddrive. Can you select "boot from CD-ROM" in the boot-menu? Then it should boot straight off the CD and you can install the OS again. Be careful when partitioning and follow the guidelines. :)

You can also try holding down both mouse buttons during startup to see if you can enter the Amiga boot menu, just like on the A1200 for example. By doing this, you can check if it works without startup-sequence.

Once the system has loaded the Kickstart into memory and it resets, please press down both mouse buttons. This should bring forth a preboot menu.

Please also try to disconnect the Ethernet cable to see if that works. If I'm not mistaken, the boot-sequence stops until a net connection is made. Might be wrong down, but worth a shot.

I've found this on another forum:

"-HD goes in J20, DVD in J23
- make sure to plug your ethernet cable into port0 (one at outer edge of MB)
- the USB keyboard must be installed on the higher/upper USB connector at rear of MB"

Could it be because I have sata2 hard drive connected? Or is it capable of running both the sata2 and sata1 drives?

I'm not 100 percent sure, but the SAM440EP sports the Silicon Image 3114 controller. According to the specifications I found, it is compliant with the SATA 1.0 specification. I've tried searching on Google and found bits and pieces of information in various discussion forums. From what I've read, it doesn't seem like the SAM supports SATA2.

If I'm wrong and someone knows it works, please correct me. :)

Sil 3114 is SATA 1 only, does not support SATA II speed nor extended features
Found the above info in this forum:

It should be a jumper you can set on the SATA2 devices, so that they operate in SATA mode. Maybe worth trying?

Well I just don't know what I have done for it not to install? I feel like banging my head against a wall lol. I just don't understand how when I first tried to install os 4.1 it took me all the way to partitioning the hd ( but I stupidly decided to restart the system and try again ) but now it just hangs on the amigaos 4.1 screen and then get no drive activity and really don't want to go out and buy another hd. :(

Does the Live CD work when booting it without a HD connected?

I see that you're using the new HD you bought. What happens if you try the old one again?

Have you tried the elimination method? Removing one piece of equipment at the time to see if you can locate the error?

Are you dual-booting with Linux. If yes, does Linux run?

I agree it is very strange that it worked before, but now it doesn't after you did that reset. :(

Hi Ray,

I think we're closing in on the solution here.... Found the info below for you. It is in a thread at Amigaworld.net (http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?viewmode=flat&order=0&topic_id=27292&forum=14&post_id=462670&refresh=Go)

-----
My  problem seems to stem from IPrefs hanging for some unknown reason. I  had done enough tests to determine that this is also where it hangs when  booting from the CD.

I had  IPrefs hang up on me once, and found out that the RTC got stuck. You  might want to check that. IIRC U-Boot has a command to reset the RTC.

enter the UBoot prompt and type:

date reset (enter)
date 110113002008 (enter)

to set for example the date to Nov, 1 2008 13:00
---

According to the people in the thread, this solved the problem of AmigaOS 4.1 getting stuck at boot-up. :D

Hope it works!!! Fingers crossed mate!!! :)

Heheh!! I think we've nailed it. Look here:

"Hi all,

I just wanted to tell that if your OS4 machine stops at the bootpic, you may check the date in Uboot.
Halt at the Uboot prompt and set the correct date and time using:

date MMDDhhmmYYYY

When the date is completely wrong, OS4 doesn't boot because of a known bug of one OS4 component."

In the video you posted, I noticed the date was completely wrong. :D You are not in 2077 man.

When you turn on the machine, it displays three options:

1) Press SPACE for Prefs
2) Enter for Boot Selector
3) ESC for Prompt

I think you should select the last one. Then you will get the U-Boot prompt. :)

Please try the following:

Type "DATE RESET" (then press enter)

This resets the date.

Now type "date 090521192010" (then press enter)

This will set the date to the 5th of September clock 21:19 year 2010.

Good luck! :)

PS: You can change 2119 to the time when you entered the data, so it gets fully correct. :)
