I've run a FreeNAS box for years, works a treat both remotely and locally.
Many people do indeed roll their own Cloud storage Jeff, which is what I've essentially done for myself. The only remaining dark spot in my Cloud solution would be if the building where my servers are located was to be robbed/burned down, but I'll take my chances on that and do monthly offsite dumps.
Cloud storage, in theory is a wonderful thing - but after the Snowden leaks were exposed, I won't use anything but my own solution.
