my new Amiga 4000T!
« on: January 21, 2012, 01:44:00 AM »
Well, I took a chance on an Amiga from out of state and got a hell of deal!  Just picked up an Amiga 4000T, and it's pretty much mint.

Was loaded with a Video Toaster 4000 & other related cards that I pulled and plan on eBaying because I have no use for.

Has 16MB RAM, 1.2GB hard drive, CD-ROM drive, etc...

Here are some pics:

As mentioned in my Amiga 3000 rebuild thread, I am a old, "new" Amiga user who has been Amiga-less for ~20 years.  I think I will be keeping and building on this as my main Amiga.

So, what should I be looking to do with it?  What's are the "must-haves" for an Amiga 4000T?

One thing I wanted to mention... I grabbed this because it was a hell of a deal, but originally a 4000T did not interest me.

Now that I have it I can see why it is so desirable - it just seems rock solid.  BUT, it seems like an Amiga "without soul" to me.  New Amiga logo instead of the old C= style, standard (but decent) PC tower case, etc...

Just doesn't feel like an old-school Amiga to me!  Doesn't have the same nostalgic value for some reason.

Hah!  So, is there any local Amiga community or user group left here in MA?

Ended up de-soldering the bad battery off this 4000T and replaced with one of these hooked to the motherboard's ready-to-go-connector:

I also installed a SCSI CF card reader purchased from Mech (www.a4000t.com).

Finally, I found that the CPU heatsink was alarmingly loose on this machine.  I took the drive bay out and removed the heat sink.  Bent the spring a bit so that it would make a tighter fit, cleaned the CPU/heat sink and applied some new thermal compound, and now it's tight as a glove.

I purchased a Dell ST2421Lb off of walmart.com ($199 new) which works pretty well so far with the 23-pin to VGA adapter.
