My Amiga 1200 3D render WIP thread
« on: October 11, 2011, 06:09:04 PM »
A few months ago I decided to do a render of my old C64 and it turned out pretty decent in the end, I think. (Pic here).

This time it's my trusty old Amiga 1200 that gets the 3D treatment and I thought I'd do it as a work in progress type thread and I'm hoping I can get some feedback along the way. It's always easier to have other fresh sets of eyes looking at the work as you can get pretty blind by staring at your own stuff all day.

I haven't come that far along. I've just done a key, actually! :D

The software I'm using is Softimage XSI on a quad-core PC type thingie and I'm going for high poly realism. That's the goal, at least. ;)

If you look in my gallery you'll see that I've tried to do an Amiga 1200 before, but that was years ago and it's a bit crap.

Don't forget about the F & J keys being different (not that you would forget because looking at that C64 there's no doubt you have a keen eye). :)

I really loved the C64 you did, and hopefully the 1200 will be just as good or even better.

Yeah, I'll ty to get the different shapes and angles of them as correct as I can.

Thanks for the kind words of the C64. I'm hoping this will be a bit better as there are always things you learn from past projects, but overall I'm quite pleased with it.

The C64 isnt fully modeled though, as I never bothered to do the back of it. I'll try to do every angle of the 1200 and hopefully do a little animation as well when it's complete. :)

Whats the render time on a full model?

I haven't done a proper big render on the PC I bought a few months ago. The C64 was rendered at 3200x2400 pixels and in two passes (Ambient occlusion and HDRI lightning) and I think it was something like 30 minutes on my old 2 GHZ dual-core. The lightning pass is pretty quick, but the ambient occlusion pass can take forever if you crank up the settings.

I'll make sure to time the renders this time. It's not the fastest computer in the world, but it's significantly faster than my old one (it's and AMD Athlon II X4 640 at 3 GHZ and with 8 GB RAM).

Been a bit lately so I haven't done as much as I would have wanted. I've started making the basic shape of the case now. Lots of tweaking to do. :)
