I'm not sure there's a lot of point in putting a 3d card on a 16-bit 8MHz bus.....

Don't forget how primitive the early 3D cards were though - none of this hardware T+L and stuff. Plus they didn't have much memory so you'd still need to texture upload a lot (2MB for the S3 ViRGE, and that included the frame buffer!).
