It's still possible to get a good Amiga system working for little cash, you just need to be patient. For instance, A1200 accelerators routinely go for over £100 but I got two 68030/40s for about £60 each, and a 1200 with a 8MB RAM card for £55+postage - you just need to be a bit lucky, but patience is usually rewarded. One of the 68030's was being sold as a ROM upgrade (but the picture was clearly an '030) and the other had had a capacitor fall off (which was included and was a 2 minute replacement job).
An A2000 is a good starting point for a budget Amiga - they're very cheap and yet distinctly expandable (and MILITARY SPEC!!!!1eleven), but it can go further yet!
