To answer the original question... :)

Back when I fired up my A1000 for the first time (a few months back now!) I found that my Kickstart disk was knackered. Luckily I found a handy program on the Aminet which takes a standard ROM image (like you can download quite easily) and makes a bootable Kickstart disk from it. Works a treat for my A1000 (a very early one).

Can't remember what it's called, that program, but it's on there somewhere. Let me know if you can't find it, and I'll find out what it was.
