the c64 was still selling fairly well when commodore axed it. they had even developed a nexgen c64 the c65 with an amigalike chipset and c64 emulation. i know quite a few people who used c64 regularly up till about '95.
manufacturers sometimes dont sell what could sell because they want to move the company in a new direction or dont have a know what direction they are moving. (commodore (what are we doing today? pc clones, c65 AAA amiga transputer))
