Mediator Voodoo 5 to Radeon 9200
« on: January 18, 2016, 04:49:18 AM »
I just got my Radeon 9200 in from Elbox and am about to install it. Does anyone know if I can rename the Voodoo driver files to Radeon and reuse all the video modes I setup while I had the Voodoo 5 card installed? If so can you outline the process of the swap to get it working? Elbox told me in an Email it could be done but never replied back on which files to rename.

EDIT:

Well I am on my Radeon 9200 Pro now! WOW! Is all I have to say. It looks so much better than my Voodoo 5 did. I'm guessing I wont have 3D support on it, but I just discovered during the install I can run both cards at the same time. Have over 600MB of fast ram now is also awesome!

Nice that you got it working, what do you think about the speed of the Radeon compared to the voodoo5?

I have two unused Radeons, they work fine in OS4 but were very slow in OS3.9 so i put my Voodoo3 back. But the speed was so slow that i suspect it to be some user error. I didn't need any benchmark program to feel how slow it was. Please say that it's "fast" so i can get motivated to try again :)

It's very easy to duplicate the screen modes from the voodoo to the radeon in P96mode btw.

It feels very fast. I did manage to copy my Voodoo setting in P96 mode, but not all modes were supported. Strangest was every screen mode I have built has a 24bit true color mode in voodoo, but when I moved it over to the Radeon it gave me a message I had unsupported modes. It was all of the true color ones. Also a few of my other resolutions didnt work on my monitor using the Radeon copy of them. 320x480 for example.

To get your truecolor modes on the Radeon you just need to open P96Mode and toggle the color depth gadget on your truecolor modes to Truecolor+Alpha.

Regarding Radeon 9200 being slow, there seems to be a bug in P96mode when you change graphics cards it sometimes converts to nonsensical refresh rates and/or pixel depth modes, sometimes this makes modes run really slow or causes crashes even though initially it seems like it is working.  Best option is to just recreate the modes, which is really easy with the Radeon on DVI since you pretty much just put in 60Hz vertical and most of the time it will work with minor tweaking.

I have the true color+Alpha on my modes. Before on voodoo 5 I had 4 options. On Radeon its only chunky, hi color and true color+alpha.

As far as resolutions go I plan to try and see if I can get more working by creating new ones from scratch. Its acting strange from this copy of the old ones like you said. Still looks great on DVI though. It does appear that the vertical is the issue on the resolutions that dont work. How do you edit that on a new resolution. Its not a field it lets me change from what I have tried?

EDIT:

I got it, I just had to move the slider in the pixel clock is all. All my resolutions are back as well after I recreated them all.
