HELP: tuning Picasso96 and PIV to flat screen
« on: August 17, 2013, 06:15:15 AM »
I can't tune Picasso96 to work with the native resolutions of a couple of LCD flat screens I have acquired.  The stock drivers appear to be designed for CRTs with higher frequencies, and, these have always worked fine with CRTs.

Both of my flatscreens (an ETC - 1360 x 768, and a Dell - 1280 x 1024) want a 60Hz vertical frequency.  I've read the docs and tried to use Picasso96Mode and PVS to adjust to the required freq, the only resolution I can get working is 640 x 480.  If someone else has found this obvious and straight forward, please explain it to me.  Is there a good tutorial somewhere?

My system: A3000 with 060 and PIV running OS3.9.

Thanks Ratte.  Without reading German, it appears that thread is primarily about UAE, which still might be applicable to my ignorance.

I would have thought there are many people running P96 on classic Amigas, with wide and normal aspect ratio LCDs, who have long since fought this dragon.  How many Picasso boards, not to mention all the others that are compatible with P96, are still in use.  Part of my reluctance to experiment beyond a certain point is the rumor that incorrect settings/frequencies can destroy a monitor.  Perhaps that is less true of LCDs.

It's been a couple of years since I fine tuned the PIV in my A3000/060 to my LCD but I will be having to do it again soon as i've been rebuilding it as time permits recently.

You might want to try the tool linked at the bottom of this page as it's "easier" than the default P96 tools.  Wouldn't be a bad idea to upgrade to the most recent version of P96 from this page either though not strictly neccesary.

Thank You Nick!

PicassoModeTNG is much superior to the older PicassoMode.

The only thing I stumbled thru was saving.  I had to save as Default configuration.  Reboot to load the new screen modes. Return to ScreenMode to select the preferred screen mode.  Reboot again.

PIV doesn't have unlimited resolution/bandwidth.  I couldn't get the 1600 x 1200 to work at all, nor 1280 X 1024.  1024 x 768 x 16M @ 60Hz looks pretty good on the new LCD, though.

It appears I may have to go back and tweak the native screens, but now thanks to you, it won't be a guessing game.

Good job!
