Intel all the way.  Either Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad.  I just bought my son a Dell XPS 420 Core 2 Quad off of ebay for $731 shipped.. brand new in box.  Came w/a 19" widescreen Dell LCD.  Steal of a deal :))
