Played around with a AmigaOne...
« on: April 19, 2005, 02:26:06 PM »
So I went up to Austin to the CTACS Amiga user group.. hung out, ate pizza, helped fix a Amiga 3000 etc.. In addition to hanging out my main purpose was to play around with this new "Amiga".   I'm not one to give reviews so I'll just post what I thought..Being that I used to own a Pegasos I did my best to not be biased.

The system I played around with was the G4 800mhz (dunno what other models there are).   Much like the Pegasos this thing booted up pretty quick.  It was running I believe 1280x1024 w/a Radeon gfx card on a 19" monitor w/512megs ram.  The one thing that immediately caught my eye was it was very easy on the eyes.  Meaning..the GUI interface was very nice looking..the font complimented the gui and didnt stick out like a sore thumb.  Speed was right up there with the responsiveness.  I played around with ImageFX, Turbocalc, MakeCD, went through the usual like Prefs, graphics settings etc and found it all very professionally done.  One thing to mention is that this machine was not running JIT (correct?) so if it was this fast w/o JIT, I'm sure it will kick even more butt WITH it.  Another thing..this system has 512megs ram, I noticed it was down to a little over 256 after it booted into WB.  I did not see alot of applications running and wondered where the other 256 went.  You can set your remaining ram to a percentage for chip and a percentage for fast, correct?  if so, thats pretty neat..this system had 128megs CHIP RAM..lol.

Overall I think this is pretty awesome.  I'm like alot of classic Amiga users that are just lurking..waiting to see what the future will bring. The system is here, I just hope "big business" comes around and sees there is promise in this system.

Great job Freiden(sp?) brothers!
