I did it with WinUAE and it worked out great.  Like you
said when you have 10 year old disk, I don`t see anything wrong with a backup of something you already own.  The way I did it was I formated my drive on the Amiga, (a 520 meg) then put in the PC.  WinUAE took it alright.  It was perfect to restore my system and install some good stuff from Aminet.

Try to add it to  WinUAE, in the add harddrive settings and use a workbench.adf to boot up, also go to Aminet, and get IDEfix97. Have it unzipped and set up on some place on your Windows drive.  Make shure you add that to you winUAE harddrive settings.
After WinUAE loads up Workbench, use the find device in IDEfix97.  It should find it and let you partition, and format the drive.

Oh just unzip it into a folder then, make shure you add that folder to the drive setup of Winuae. It will
look like it is a drive.  Open it and just run Find Device.  It should find it, and let you set up your Amiga harddrive
