I've in the same hook as you, Franko, but lowered my small cig consumption to 4 per day and my lungs are in good (?) shape owing to daily brisk walk.

FOUR A DAY... good gawd man how do you manage I need four an hour... :)

PS:walkings not good for you, nearly killed me so it did, when I was walking backward trying to light up on a windy day and wandered onto the road and hit the side of a taxi... :)

Self-control  - after 40 years of 30 cigarettes per day you really need it...
I dropped 30 kg via walking and food control in 3 years - had to do it because my knees were about to wear out. Now I can climb stairs again.
