It would be slightly slower then 256 colour mode. It uses the same amount of memory it just uses some copper tricks to get the extra colours. It will however look ugly as you'll find a lot of the colours will "fringe" along edges. The first 64 colours will be solid though (in ham8, 16 in ham6) so your window borders should be okay.
I remember when I used to think Ham mode was cool! That was a long time ago!
