9.13

p7zip is a port of the Windows program 7za.exe provided by 7-zip.

7-zip is a file archiver with the highest compression ratio.

  7za (a = alone) is a standalone version of 7-Zip.
7za supports 7z, cab, zip, gzip, bzip2, Z and tar formats.

How much ram does it need?

It depends on used options when creating archive, how big and how many files are in the archive/will be in the archive etc., but in short
a lot of RAM is required ;)

I just hope I can run it (exactly how much is "a lot" of RAM - is it practical to do anything with only 16 - 32MBs or RAM installed)?

I did a quick test on WinUAE with 32MB RAM and I was been able to compress and decompress 1,5MB wav file with default p7zip's settings.

which will, of course, run on my MorphOS machine.

Hehe, not this time. ixemul.lib v63+ rules :P

Even better if there is a native MorphOS port (have not looked, yet, just thinking aloud.)

That's true. On PPC system you should use PPC binaries, there is no reasone to use m68k ports of open source programs. There should be PPC port available for your system.

Wow. I tried to unarchive a 35MB file having 121MB of free RAM and it complained that i don't have enough memory.

And how big are files inside this archive? Which dictionary size was used to create archive? Does Xad's 7z can unpack the archive?

Dictionary size
Enter the dictionary size for the compression method. The higher dictionary size means the better compression, but it is slower and needs more memory. Memory usage for LZMA compressing is about 10 times more than dictionary size. Memory usage for LZMA decompressing is close to value of dictionary size. Memory usage for PPMd compressing and decompressing is almost equal to dictionary size.
