In the good old days, you could get some more memory by freeing one bitplane of the initial workbench screen using a command called Add21K (I only found
ftp://de.aminet.net/pub/aminet/util/misc/add36k.lzh
on Aminet, but the original Add21K seems to be found in
ftp://de.aminet.net/pub/aminet/demo/disk/mlw_cr.lha
aswell). And on Kick2.0 and higher you can also do an
AddBuffers DF0: -999
to get some more memory. Hope this helps.
