I know I could go full out and get a USB add-on card for the A1200 but that seems like overkill just to support a mouse.

Don't go that route for a mouse because it won't be compatible with way too many things.

I use a USB to PS2 mouse/keyboard adapter with PS2 to Amiga adapters... works well with the logitech unifying devices.

Can you tell me the specific Unifying device you had success with?

I know I've used the K800 keyboard. Not sure of the mouse model number. I find very little stuff that won't work, but occasionally something won't work like cosair keyboards.

Its an active USB->PS2 adapter and they are not cheap. Its not just some pass-through thing. Its similar to this:

Ahh, I see! I thought you were just talking about the simple PS/2 to USB adapters that are bundled with mice. Yeah, that one below has a little more going on. And you are right to say it is pricey. Not sure if I want to take it far in that direction, but would be willing to do so on a good PS/2 compatible mouse...if I can find one.

the price of those adapters has certainly gone up...

still, I'd look for some solution to use a modern usb mouse. I researched and bought the best optical wireless mouse that still supported PS2 protocol. Range is not great despite having a huge dongle. Battery life is also not good.
