There is a windowmanager for X11 called amiwm (
http://www.lysator.liu.se/~marcus/amiwm.html) that uses icons from AmigaOS. You can probably look through the source and get some info there. I havent checked it myself so I dont know how well documented it is. Im not sure about the license either so be sure to check that if you want use parts of it.
