The 1000 can't read newer FFS floppies because it is a Workbench/Kickstart 1.3 based machine-newer (2.0+) FFS floppies can't be read by the older system software.
However there are hardware hacks to put the kickstart in ROM on the 1000, then it could be updated to newer kickstart and then read newer floppies. But then it wouldn't be 'pure' anymore ;-)
