OS4 enthusiasts: What's your AmiWest expectations?

Amiga X2000 launch announced; this time supplied as a complete branded and marketable machine.
  - an updated A4000 look-a-like case
  - Multicore (affordable) IBM CPU
  - OS4.2 with SMP etc

- or -

Hyperion announce an OS4 ARM port, A-EON announce new ARM based hardware, the whole (old and new) Amiga community rejoice and 'Amiga' has an albeit minor comeback as a popular hobbyist platform.

But ... in reality I guess we'll get updates on the X2000, progress reports regarding (and obstacles blocking)  memory protection, SMP etc plus news of other incremental changes elsewhere.

The laptop was a neat idea as it would have made adoption of OS4.x affordable.  Once people have OS4 it's easier for them to justify an upgrade.  However, as others have pointed out it would have been terribly underpowered.

An affordable hardware platform for OS4 would be a massive boost though.

I know this is straying from the thread topic (entirely my fault for listing fantasty 'Amiwest' announcements) but it seems today we have so many options available to us, it's sad to see the platform stagnating.   Even if we stick with PPC I'm assuming there are more modern, affordable CPU options;  how do the modern IBM power CPUs compare to PA6 in terms of unit cost?

I don't mean to detract from Trevor's efforts with the X1000 - I'm talking about the lower/entry/SAM level.

Anyway, back on topic ... does no one else have Amiwest expectations?

Magnetic: the infamous os4 laptop that was "already running"

It wouldn't surprise me if it was running, in a bare form (the underlying kernel?), at Hyperion, with the boot security code / check removed, purely as a proof of concept.  Running != usable.

Wasn't there a rumour of an X86 build too?   Wasn't sure if this was developers making a proof of concept or something started on amiga.org purely to fan the flamewars...

Regarding the X86 build;  I thought I read it here a couple of years ago.  I believe someone mentioned that the 68k assembly routines had been converted to C (required for PPC) and hence theoretically it could now be cross compiled for any target.   I'm sure someone claimed a developer had made an X86 build which at least booted some sort of kernel.

However, searching both here and via Google I can't find any mention of it.

I remember reading it!  Someone must remember?   Am I losing it?
