GVP 2000-030 Combo rev 3

Okay, I've only got a few strands hair out after futzing with this bugger for the whole weekend.

Just can't seem to get it to be recognized AT ALL.

The combo card is a rev 3.  only the installed memory is in, although I do have the simms to bump it all the way up.

Been over to Amiga Hardware Database and Bigbook.  Thought I had figured out the jumpers, but it seems I haven't.

The 2000 boots just fine without the card in it.  It has a kipper2 8MB RAM expansion and a CFIDE68K IDE adapter with a CF microdrive loaded with 3.1.

When I add the card, after supposedly configuring it for 40MHz, nothing!

I've checked jumpers and have tinkered until I think I've tried just about every combo possible.  NADA.

Occasionally I will hit a combination that allows the 2000 to boot, but the card is not recognized!

I've also tried booting from a floppy with the latest and greatest GVP Install disk, same thing.  The card is not seen!

I've pulled the kipper2 memory expansion out thinking it might interfere.  NO change.

Could someone please help me out here.

What should the jumpers be for a 40MHz with coprocessor, no SCSI devices attached, and both with and without additional memory outside the ZII memory area so the kipper2 card won't conflict?

Barring that, anybody want to buy a GVP 2000-030 rev 3combo card with a full rack of memory?

Well, I at least got the computer running with the board in it, but it is still not recognized.  I also dropped the kipper2 memory board back in.

Here's the jumpers:  (for brevity, I'm listing ONLY the jumpers that are shorted/closed)
J4, J6, J11, J14, J9.

The connectors are as follows:

CN15 1-2
CN14 2-3
CN7 1-2
CH16 2-3

Anything NOT listed is NOT connected.

Memory is 2MB chip (minimegi), and 8 other.

ROM 3.1, OS 3.1.

If I use the Install floppy, what do I install?  Nothing presents itself.  Or do I need to drop down to CLI and run some command to get this thing recognized?

The 2000 is a rev 6.

No, don't have access to another 2000.

I'm beginning to wonder if the card might be bad myself.

Guess I'll have to touch base with the seller I bought it from.

Try it with no other cards installed. Triple-check your jumper settings based on BBOAH and amiga.resource.cx. Make sure your card slot and edge connector are nice and clean, and seating correctly, and not affected by any battery damage.

Been there, done that.  Tried with plain jane set up.  Sysinfo just says 68000 installed and none of the memory.

Used an eraser on the contacts, nice and shiny and no residue.
 

Beyond that, as said above, it should "just work". Try card in a different Amiga if possible, and try a different card in that same Amiga, should help you narrow down whether it's the motherboard or the card.

Wish I could tryn it in another Amiga, but the only other machines I've got are A500's and an A3000D.  Would it work in a 3000?

I'd be a bit wary of the GVP install disk since sometimes they can install some outdated and dodgy software. I'd especially avoid any of the GVP disk prep stuff. Check Ralph Babel's archive and the GVP-M website to see if there's any updates.

Went to both sites and downloaded what is supposed to work.  It doesn't see the card either!

I'm thinking my best bet is to contact the ebay seller I got it from and work out a refund.

Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Well if you're passing through Lake Charles between the 11th and 23rd then you're welcome to try it in my A2000.  Actually you're closer to where I work in Midland (for some reason I thought you lived in Houston), but I'd rather not stick my A2000 in my suitcase and leave it to the mercy of the airline baggage handlers.  

I know what you mean about not trutsing the airlines!

Yeah, Midland isn't too far.  However, not going to be anywhere near Lake Charles, so still feel my best bet is talking to the seller.

I've tried it without the kipper2 memory expansion with just the card AND with the SIMMS in the card.

Nada.


I picked up the SIMMS from a member here who swore they were the correct ones and I have no reason to not believe him.

I've contacted the seller and told him it wasn't working and his response was essentially, "Gee, that's too bad.  Let me know how it works out."

I responded a bit more directly saying it doesn't work.  I want my money back.

Now we wait.  Of course there's always opening a case with ebay.  That's a bit extreme, but it usually wakes up a seller and forces them to rectify the situation.

Well, I got a bit more direct with my second correspondence.

I said, it doesn't work.  I want my money back.

Seller got the hint.  he's issuing a refund and I send the card back.

So, if anyone watches ebay and this card pops up, RUN!!!!!

I'm planning on hunting down another accelerator sometime.

If it doesn't work, then I'll suspect the motherboard.  However, it was also sold to me by a member here who assured me it worked just fine.  There's no significant corrosion anywhere near the slot or where the battery was removed, so again, I have no reason to think it could possibly be the motherboard.

It is my understanding that when a accelerator card is added to the A2000, it will disable the internal 68000 CPU and use the onboard CPU instead.
A possible reason for your GVP card not working, can be that the kipper2 8MB RAM expansion and CFIDE68K IDE adapter you got connected prevents the GVP 030 CPU from taking over. Have you tried running your Amiga with the GVP card only, without the two other expansions?

Yes.  Same result.  Computer acts as if the card is not installed.  Sysinfo shows only th e 68000 with cards installed.
