WHDLoad: Some questions ...
« on: March 30, 2009, 11:10:55 AM »
Hello,

From what I read on these forums, WHDLoad can help me play games from my hard drive even if such games don't have an install option (example: lemmings). Is this right?

If so can someone help me a little ...
I have downloaded WHDLoad_dev.lha and also lemmings Disk 1 and Disk 2 (I do have the original of these, they came with my A500+). Now what do I need to do?

Also why is WHDLoad_dev given in lha format and not in adf? Is there a difference between these two formats?

Regards,
Sim085

Thank you very much for your reply. I downloaded Lemmings from http://www.whdownload.com/. The download is in zip format. When I open the zip however I do not have any .lha files. I only have Disk.1, and Disk.2!

I can obviously download the .lha files from the site you have suggested, but I still would like to know what the zip file I downloaded (for lemmings) is used for.

Ok, Since I am using WinUAE I guess this is just a game of moving the contents of the zip file into a folder inside my Workbench right? (I did this and when I start workbench I can see the files I moved).

Now (sorry for the stupid question) how can I install WHDLoad from an .lha file? Do I need to install some other tool on Workbench? At the moment I have a plain new workbench 2.1 installation!

Thank you very much for your help :) I have already read parts of that site (although I must admit not all of it).

Do I need to have the kickstart in place for the installation process? I have extracted the files and moved them to my workbench. However when I click on the install button I get the error "Wait for disk activity to finish". .. always!

1 - install http://www.whdload.de/whdload/WHDLoad_usr.lha - this will copy all the whdload files to the correct places
What am I doing is extract the contents of the .lha file from windows. Then copy all this in my WinUAE installation. I am clicking on the install button and I receive the error. This happens with the user version as well! Is it bad if I extract the contents of from Windows. Also do I maybe have to download an older version of whdload since I am using workbench 2.1?

there is nothing wrong with extracting in windows, just extract to a folder you can read from in winuae.

In workbench I have the folder Expansion. From windows I moved the .lha contents to the folder 'Expansion' in workbench. I then start workbench from winuae and under the folder expansion I have the whdload installation icon. Is this correct way to do it? Or winuae has some other method to do this?

SOLVED THIS PROBLEM :)

I just upgraded the CPU from 68000 to 68060!! So does this mean that WHDLoad cannot be installed from a 68000 CPU!?

Just another question ....

I remeber my brother telling me that Defender of the Crown did not come on an installer and that he just copied the contents of the disk onto the drive! Wouldn't this also be possible with a game such as lemmings? In that case what does WHDLoad give me more?

p.s. - I have an A500+ (68000)

Hi,

Should I use WHDLoad for games that I can install normally? I have the original Colonization (I used to play this all the time) which did come with an installer .. should I just install it as normal? or I should download the WHDLoad version of it? What is best?
