Id still go for the PAL A1200 - Im also based in Chicago, and I bought my PAL A1200 through AmigaKit. I can wholeheartedly recommend them. Although the voltages are different, you can still buy a US PSU through AmigaKit that works just fine.
Id recommend getting a PAL A1200 as the majority of software out there is written with PAL in mind. Even though you can switch modes at power up, some software will revert back to PAL.
Im waiting for Jens Scandoubler as well - I've been informed by AmigaKit that they're going to carry it later this summer, and installing it is a cinch... no soldering.
Ive currently got my A1200 hooked up to a monitor using an external scandoubler (bought for far less than $900 might I add!) and it works fine. Ive also hooked it up to my LCD TV using composite and while the picture is fuzzy, it will keep you going until the scandoubler comes out.
