WTB: Memory card for A2000
« on: March 24, 2010, 07:35:48 PM »
Looking for 4 MB or so more for my A2000.  Right now it's already got a 2630 w/ 4 MB, but I'm hoping to take it up to 8 or 12 MB of memory.

Sorry, I'm in Fort Collins, Colorado, USA.  (I thought that was in my profile, but I must have missed that!)

I have a 2630 expansion card with 4 MB Fast RAM on it.  I modded my 2000 with an ECS Agnus and now all of the memory that's soldered on the actual motherboard is seen as Chip RAM.  Reading that page, it would seem that I can still go to 8 MB on the Zorro-II bus since the 4 MB of Fast RAM is on the 2630 card?

Even a 4 MB upgrade would be a big help.  I managed to get MiamiDX working via the serial port and pppd on my linux box, but I now find that these fancy new-fangled TCP/IP applications eat up all of my memory.  :(

Doesn't the 2630 put its RAM into the 24-bit Zorro II address space? Worth checking, since you might still be limited to 8MB.

Hrm...

This is what the manual says about the memory: "The A2630 also contains fast, 32-bit wide memory to complement the 32-bit Motorola chips. It comes with 2 or 4 megabytes of 32-bit wide on-card RAM which runs at the 68030’s speed. With this fast memory installed, the A2630 may deliver a 400% - 600% speed increase in most integer based operations."

If you're wanting to go online and surf, only 4 more megs (especially the 16-bit, Zorro 2 variety) may not be satisfying.  You could go for a different 32-bit accelerator with more ram or (as Save2600 said) snag a DKB 2632 on eBay.  Actually, I got one on eBay last year for a modest price, didn't have to wait too long.  It's the other DKB fastram expansion (3128?) that's rare and very expensive.

Hee!  I'm not really wanting to 'go online and surf' so much as I'm wanting to run an IRC client and a telnet client without the entire system grinding to a halt.  I have no illusions about any real surfing on this system.  Right now I'm pretty happy with the system as it is, it's just that MiamiDX and one other program pretty much tap the available Fast RAM.

Thanks for all of the input, guys.  I think at this point, if I could get 4 MB on the Zorro bus for (relatively) cheaps, I'd be happy.  Finding a 2632 would be better, and upgrading to a GVP card would be very nice, but honestly I'm not really out for more speed, just for less 'Out of Memory' issues.  I accept the fact that my 25 year old computer isn't going to be fast and I have no issues with that.  I've got modern machines if I'm in the mood for 'fast'. :D
