AROS working hardware report and tips n trix
« on: January 26, 2009, 02:05:51 PM »
CPU: intel 600mhz PIII

MOBO: Asus P3V 4X
Comment: In bios, set ”Plug&Play OS” to NO other wise no sound, network or graphic card. It will fallback on vesa.

SOUND CARD: SB live. Works perfectly.
Comment: Set the correct driver in Sys:Prefs/AHI. Turn up the frequency to 22 or 44

NETWORK:
Comment. Uses rtl8139.device.  See wmvaros_Manual.pdf  for config. Don’t know the brand but rtl8139 was printed on the chips on two different cards I had laying around. Make sure rtl8139.device is in Devs/networks drawer. Se all files to make visible.

GRAPHIC CARD: Nvidia Geforce MX 440 SE
Comment. Use the Nividia driver set in grub2 menu at startup. Works perfectly in wmvaros 1.01 then use prefs/screenmodes to set resolution.(If you use vesa set the resolution direct in grub at startup)  For permanent loading change SYSTEM:boot/grub/grub.cfg and change nvidia to default loading or rather the number of witch one in the list of possible resolutions it shall load (0 will be the first). Boot drawer visible with “See all files” in aros. I use 1280*1024 24bit resolution and it’s snappy and fast.

E-UAE PREFORMANCE: I transferred a copied System partition in a map of Bloodwych’s classicwb full with help of filezilla ftp on the pc and the ftp server yafs started on aros. Loaded it in Euae with 68020 settings.  It works very well on the 600mzh. I tested Alienbreed tower assault and Heimdall2 AGA whdload  and both run flawless. Turned down sound resolution to 8bit in euae to save cpu power and sound mode normal instead of accurate. I have to add that the simplest solution is to use the amigaforever cd and everything will be taken care of by paulones wmvaros and amibridge will work with no problem.  Running classicWB was an experiment.

TRANSFERS: The filezilla plus yafs setup is really convenient. Filezilla sees the work partition and it easy to transfer back an fourth. If something prevents this setup to work there is another way. If aros is installed on an xp machine then aros will see the xp partiton. So one could download something then reboot into aros and access the file.  But this will soon be unnecessary when the browser allows direct contact with the net.

IMPRESSIONS: It handles well on the 600 mhz machine. Aros is fast and equally responsive as the vista64 on the core2duo 2,6ghz.  One has to be mindful of not cranking up the load on the workbench on euae when a modest cpu like the 600 is used. But it defiantly works on a 600 mhz.

The Amistart dock is well worth getting into. It is totally configurable. It is default set up with a windows like start menu, but can be reconfigured. I lifted out the”My soft ware”, “System” and “Tools” and made them like “drop up” menus, se pictures. I do miss toolsdaemon very much. I hope this gets ported so dropdown menu could be configured up in the upper list. (Could Ubuntus dropdown menus be ported??), so the amidock could be used more like a dock for the most important apps. ( Just a little wishing not important.)

INSTALLATION COMMENTS: I had this installed on a XP machine with 1 partition. If you are a “Try, cry then desperately read manual” kind of person remember this;  let it be unpartition space on the drive. Use the unpartitioned space in the installer. Set up both partitions System and work. And now this is very IMPORTANT!!! system have to be FFS.  Recommended space is 500-1000mb. Work can be SFS that is faster and as big as one like. (Too big and enormous amount of files in one drawer will be problem). It restarts and after that its minor room for error in the install.
DUAL BOOT: After install it will boot into aros. For making it dual boot go into aros drawer SYS:boot/grub/grub.cfg and add this between the other post in the list.

menuentry "Microsoft Windows"
{
chainloader (hd0,1)+1
}

This is if you did it like I did with just one XP partition first on the drive before the aros install.

Well this was long but I hope it could evoke some curiosity to test it like it was meant to be e.g natively installed.

Here som pictures

EDIT: Disregard that of using FFS for SYSTEM. In the new vmwaros 1.02 that is fixed and the recomendation is to USE SFS for SYSTEM. It is faster and more reliable filesystem that now works.

EDIT 2: in vmwaros 1.02, Yafs shared folder is changed from Work: to work:Extras/pub.

@Lorraine

What machines did not work??

Maybe it was something in bios that could be adjusted.

I think one thing in newer machines is that sata have to be recognized as ide. some legacy setting.

Another thing is that it want just one hd. At least it was so before.

Then it could possibly if it is older be something with the plug n play os setting.

There are people far far insightfuller than me to answer that.

If you have a bunch of pc's the odds are very high that some of them will work.

So the new fixed ata drivers mean that the chance of immediate install success just went up.

And it also works on notebooks.
This is good news.

@Lorraine
That was a nice little board. A saw prices around 170 euros. Almost twice the speed of the dino midi tower i preformed my test on. It would be very intresting to see if you could get it going with the new drivers. I also saw that there was a bios update for this board in 2008. You dont have a atx midi tower in the basement you can test it on also? Just to get more test data of working/not working cards?

Just saw that vmwaros 1.02 can be downloaded as a complete distro otherwise it could have been complicated if it was just an update and the non ata fixed 1.0 had to be installed first.

I hope you can get it going.

@Paulone
It is me that have to thank you for your splendid work and thank the magician Schulz for the usb support and to all involved in AROS. I just emphasized the FFS becase in an erlier tests, it did not boot after install when I use the SFS for SYSTEM, but it worked with FFS. So I thought, others, may have tested with the wrong filesysten and gave up. But this was good I shall try a clean install with 1.02 and SFS for SYSTEM.

best regards

The VIA UniChrome Pro looks like it’s not only a combine 2d/3d but also a mpeg2 encoder. It does sound complicated, but with the right drivers it’s a good combination of features. If you did a test with the PCI radeon at some point and it works, it would be interesting if you dropped a line about it.

Thanx for checking. I hope it's made to work later on. Or perhaps someone can make sense of the  error message and have an idea of what to do.
